Election Policy Not Level For All Candidates
I criticized the Wasaga Sun in an earlier editorial because of their actions in the 2006 election. To recap, the Sun reaped in thousands of dollars of candidate campaign money while planning to print a last minute editorial with their "picks" for Council. None of the candidates were told in advance that they were advertising in vain. Instead, they learned of it like a kick to the stomach when they opened up the newspaper a week before the election. The Sun's election policy conveniently, or cleverly, prevented candidates from writing to their free letters to the editor section, leaving them with only one option; pay the Wasaga Sun to print a letter in your own defense. As one who was on the receiving end of this unfortunate policy, it felt like extortion. It also felt a little like high school. If you weren't one of the popular kids, you might understand why candidates were upset by this.

Looking at the two people vying for the Mayor's seat, Steven Fishman and incumbent Cal Patterson, shows just how different the landscape is in this election. Patterson has a website which he uses as a digital brochure while Fishman has adopted a more interactive style.
We have also learned that Sam Moncada of River Road East has joined the race as a council nominee. Mr. Moncada was not available for comment.

The Politics of Being Vague
Before you begin to read this editorial I must disclose that I am running for Council. Most visitors to this website already know this, but each time I write an article about this 2010 election, I will be sure to declare this fact so that there is no confusion.
In spite of the fact that I am a candidate, I am still a voter. As a voter, taxpayer and long time member of this community, I am always intrigued at the methods people use to become elected. Where are their platforms?
