Can food be affecting your child’s behavior?

The yellow buses are out on the roads; the kids are back to school! Parents are delighted but this time of year can be stressful for some children. Sitting at a desk for the better part of the day may be dreadful for some children. More and more we are hearing the terms; ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Many parents of active and energetic children may even question if their child may fall under these categories. Most likely they do not. The British Journal of Psychiatry states that only 3% of children are diagnosed with the disorder, however the numbers are on the rise.

Before accepting a diagnostic label there are many factors to think about which may explain the root cause of your child’s behavior. Be sure that your health care provider does a thorough physical exam to rule out ear infections, sinusitis, visual or hearing problems or other neurological problems. Other important factors to consider are birth trauma, nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, reduced immune function, systemic yeast infections, overexposure to antibiotics or other toxins (heavy metals), reactions to vaccinations, visual problems or sensory integration issues. A naturopathic doctor can help you assess for all these things.

Most common conventional treatment for ADD/ADHD is methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta etc). This is a stimulant that has an opposite effect of calming the nervous system and enhances attention in the child. Often the drug does diminish symptoms (however does not cure the problem) and may come with side effects.

In practice, greater then 50% of children improve drastically simply by implementing diet changes and addressing food allergies. Often the first step is eliminating refined sugar and food additives from the child’s diet. Eliminate processed foods that have artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives (benzoates, nitrates, sulfites), additives (calcium silicate, BHT, BHA, benzoyl peroxide, emulsifier, thickeners, stabilizers, vegetable gum, starch) and MSG.

Each child responds differently, therefore it is important to address the root cause of your child’s behavioral problems. For some children it can be dairy products while others respond better to the removal of food additives. You can also see drastic improvement with supplementation since children may have irregular eating habits and therefore they may be at risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Nutrition can be a challenge with children, therefore it is key to plan ahead and shop smart. Start encouraging healthy eating habits at a young age. Here are some great lunch alternatives to keep your child’s lunch nutritious. Increase the protein (nuts, egg, chicken/turkey, cheese, legumes, beans) to stabilize blood sugar and limit the carbs to prevent fatigue, foggy thinking and increased hunger.
  • Hard boiled egg with fresh veggies
  • Pita filled with avocado, humus, vegetables, egg salad, or tuna salad (use plain yogurt instead of mayo)
  • Whole grain tortilla roll up filled with meat, avocado/mustard/hummus and lettuce
  • Rice crackers and veggies with dip (salsa, hummus, baba ganoush)
  • Apple slices with almond butter
  • Unsweetened applesauce with cinnamon
  • Celery slices filled with almond butter
  • Goat cheese/ goat feta and whole wheat crackers
  • Dried fruits and nuts (no peanuts)
  • Use left over meat instead of lunch meat (high salt/preservatives) or egg for sandwich
  • Organic yogurt with granola and fresh fruit
  • Instead of soda pop, try 100% pure fruit juice diluted with carbonated water
  • Juice boxes with 100% fruit juice as well as rice or soy milk
  • Homemade healthy muffins or granola bars
