Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Siesta Sun Spa

Ingrid Bouius

It was just announced by the Mayor in a local newspaper this past week that our population has increased - to a whopping 18,170. When I first moved here the population hovered around 6,500. It still felt like a small town then. We had just one bank (TD), no McD's, no Timmy's and only a few family owned businesses who dared to struggle to survive in a town which all but rolled up the (non existent) sidewalks every Labour Day.

Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Pizza Dee's

Andy Brunell and Deb WoodPizza Dee's has been serving the residents and visitors of Wasaga Beach for as long as I can remember. Long before we had a McDonald's, Boston Pizza, Wild Wing or Topper's Pizza. What has made this little independent pizza restaurant so enduring? It might be that owners Deb and Andy, who have always gone out of their way to provide a good product at an affordable price. I can list you a bunch of cliche answers like that but in my mind it is the fact that Deb and Andy have reached icon status in Wasaga Beach. They began with the Pizza Delight Franchise but broke off and decided that the best way to serve the public was to be able to make important decisions without checking in with a corporation. When you taste their pizza you will be glad they took this step.

Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Dopey Kid Originals

Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Dopey Kid Originals

Danielle and Allen AtkinsonEvery now and then a business comes along that is truly unique. Dopey Kid Originals is one of those. It's so original in fact that I wasn't sure how to categorize it for this website. Is it a day camp? A retail store? Do I file it under events? Is it for tourists or residents? The answer as it turns out is all of the above. The focus of Dopey Kid Originals is to bring out the creativity of children which hardly even sounds like a business. It sounds like pure fun.

As I listened to Dopey Kid Originals owner Danielle Atkinson describe her business, I couldn't help but wonder how she would do on that CBC TV show the Dragons Den. In recent weeks, several local people have stood in front of the celebrity investors trying to pitch their ideas. I can just picture entrepreneur and loan shark Kevin O'Leary salivating over the idea of franchising the intense desire of parents to entertain, engage and educate their children. Dopey Kid Originals is a great idea and it is our pleasure to be featuring them this week on wasaga.com.

Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Little Marina Restaurant

Lucy - Little MarinaIt's been years since I've visited the Little Marina Restaurant. I have become so busy in recent years that a trip to the centre of town just to do something fun and relaxing is rare for me; but if there is one reason to take an extended lunch break to get out of my office, it would be to visit the Little Marina.

Boasting some fine pasta and home baked pizza, Little Marina has some rabid fans. At the time of my visit there were a couple of young guys there who just had to let me know that I must "try the bruschetta". While I set up my camera to take a couple of photos of the place, these same boys were behaving like grandsons to the owner Lucy. they moved things out of the way, arranged wine glasses to look nice for the shot and spoke of their affection for the owner and her food. "This is the best place in Wasaga" they announced so matter-of-factly. If this is any indicator of how clients feel about Lucy and her restaurant, it is no wonder that the Little Marina has survived through thick and thin to operate every year in Wasaga Beach.

Wasaga Beach At Your Service: Kirby's Complete Flooring Centre

This week we are speaking with Iva Kirby of Kirby's Complete Flooring Centre

Kirby's Complete Flooring Centre is owned and operated by Mark and Iva Kirby, 2 of the friendliest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. When you walk into their shop, you are immediately greeted by the sight of their office which sits in the back right-hand corner of the room. My first thought when I saw that was that there is always someone there to help you if needed but you can avoid that testy situation of a salesperson following you about the store as you browse. While Mark, Iva and staff take care of their day to day operations, the customer is within calling distance.

Browsing about the store you can choose from high-end tile and hardwood or more affordable laminates and vinyl products. It really is "Complete" as their title says.  See Kirby's Complete Flooring Centre Inc., Ad here - or use the "Read More" button to see the complete profile and contact info.
