November 2007 Cool Web Picks
Facebook:
Are you a Facebook holdout? This extremely popular site has exploded in recent months and Canadians it would seem are the most enthusiastic participants in the world. http://www.facebook.com
Now, I know I shouldn't be singing the praises of this website as I was recently kicked off for allegedly spamming and/or advertising, but I have since been reinstated and am as addicted as ever. If you are longing to get in touch with old friends, this is the place. If you prefer to forget those high school connections, skip it.
Time Wasters
When you are at work and want to amuse yourself, try Cute Overload http://www.cuteoverload.com/ - photos of kittens, bunnies and other assorted cuddly critters. It's enough to make the most hardened person say "ahhhhh!"
Free Games Shockwave- http://www.shockwave.com/home.jsp
No strings attached. Just play online games - You need Shockwave installed on your computer.
The Smoking Gun. This site is well known for publishing mugshots of celebrities, but more recently they've been collecting historical and amusing film clips such as educational health films, nuclear bomb propaganda, newsreels and other assorted oddities from a less enlightened time in our history. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/
Check out the hilarious Uncle Sam Productions category for "Radiation and you". The video gives some advice on how to survive an atom bomb, including great pearls of wisdom like "draw a pan full of water" and the ridiculous comments about "lying still if you are exposed to radiation" and "don't exercise".

Video Tutorials:
A found videojug.com when I was looking for a recipe for Indian Butter Chicken. Videojug offers videos about everything from International cooking to how to gamble online. The best way I can describe it is Wikipedia but with videos. Topics include Global Warming, U.S. Divorce Law, Etiquette, Beauty Tips, Pet Advice and lots more. Their database of tutorials and informational videos grows daily. http://www.videojug.com/ - It appears that a Canadian version is currently being constructed.
The Caveman's Crib
This one is just stupid. The Geico Caveman has his own website. When you log on, you are informed by the surly caveman that you are have arrived a little too early. He then jumps into the shower and invites to you make yourself at home. Silly fun.

Crazy Laws
Did you know that in Kansas you are not allowed to shoot at rabbits from a motorboat? When attending a wake in Massachusetts, mourners may eat no more than three sandwiches. These are just a sampling of the crazy laws still on the books in the U.S.
Visit these websites for more: http://www.crazylaws.com/ and http://www.dumblaws.com/ .

Canadian Tire Guy
Canadian Tire has recently ditched their longstanding commercials which featured a know-it-all guy and his wife who used Mastercraft tools. Who hasn't secretly wished they'd accidently drill themselves in the head?
Well, as it turns out, the Canadian Tire guy is annoying to lots of people. A quick search on Google turns up all sorts of blogs on the subject. A couple of the best are: http://annekenstein.typepad.com/monster/2004/11/why_i_hate_that.html
and http://www.jaypinkerton.com/blog/archives/001225.html
Live Action Simpsons
This is just cool! Someone went to a lot of trouble to re-create the intro of the popular animated Simpsons. These people should win an award.
